That said, Josie’s death and subsequent reincarnation as a doorknob (as comical as the concept sounds on paper) provides a chilling denouement to the subplot. While we get the humorous revelation of Catherine disguised as a Japanese businessman, the storyline fails to resonate due to how thin of a character Josie is, to the point where I’m still confused as to whether it was the writers’ intent was for her to be seen as a straight-up bad guy or someone more nuanced. The mill subplot from Season 1 continues, introducing Catherine’s “deceased” brother Andrew and putting the pressure on Josie as her former boss Thomas Eckhardt tracks her down. James was already one of my least favorite characters but this season makes him unbelievably selfish and idiotic, to the point that I was relieved when he finally leaves the show for good and breaks up with Donna. By far, the most asinine of these stories is James’ journey to Portland, where he gets involved in a plot that on its own would’ve made for a run of the mill Lifetime movie. These subplots are majorly campy, among them Nadine’s regression to a high-schooler and Ben Horne believing he’s a soldier in a Civil War battle.

The string of episodes that followed consisted of a myriad of subplots, with the mystery of Cooper’s psychotic ex-partner Windom Earle and the Black Lodge forming the new backbone for the show’s main plot.

With Lynch stepping away from the show, the writers were forced to figure out how to fill the season’s remaining episodes. The next two episodes serve as the climax to the main plot thread, as Cooper finally apprehended Leland and comes face to face with BOB for the first time. The revelation of Leland Palmer’s possession reestablishes a sense of urgency to the storyline as Leland/BOB murders Maddie in one of the most disturbing sequences ever to be aired on network television.

Pressured by the network to reveal Laura’s killer, Lynch and Frost finally pull back the curtain in one of the show’s best episodes, “Lonely Souls”. Donna’s budding friendship with loner Harold Smith provides an air of mystery and foreboding tension as Donna discovers his relationship with the deceased Laura, though the subplot turns out to be nothing more than a red herring. The James-Donna-Maddie love triangle is as eye-rolling as ever, only worth watching for the infamous scene of BOB lunging at a terrified Maddie. Audrey spends the majority of her screentime being held captive at One-Eyed Jack’s, not serving any real purpose to the story beyond introducing Jean Renault as the show’s latest antagonist. While the FBI storyline is as entertaining as ever, the same unfortunately can’t be said for the other storylines. Played with earnestness by David Lynch himself, Cole is instantly endearing and likeable. Without a doubt though, the most memorable character is Gordon Cole, an old friend of Cooper who speaks loudly due to being deaf in both ears.
In a surprising turn from his hard-nosed behavior in Season 1, Albert Rosenfield quickly becomes one of the ensemble’s more interesting characters, forming a buddy comedy-esque dynamic with Cooper and Truman. After recovering from his shooting at the end of Season 1, Agent Cooper resumes his hunt for Laura’s killer, now having identified Laura’s killer as the demon BOB. The first nine episodes of Season 2 serves as the conclusion of the “Who killed Laura Palmer?” storyline. It’s not a secret that the show’s sophomore season was negatively received by viewers (particularly in its second half when David Lynch had minimal involvement with the show’s creative process), to the point where it was canned by the network with just six episodes to go. I approached the second season of Twin Peaks with a mixture of excitement and dread.
